Platypus

One of the things that I am very excited to see while we are there is a platypus. This little guy is awesome. Not only is he adorable, but he is one of only five species of egg-laying mammals still in existence. They have a duck-like bill, and otter-like body and a beaver-like tail. They are semi-aquatic and feed at night on small shrimps, insects and worms on the bottom of rivers and lakes. Both the males and females are born with spurs on their back legs, but only the male produces a venom capable of killing small animals and incapacitating humans. They build their dens at the edge of a body of water and can sleep for as much as 14 hours per day.
